    Topco Associates is currently seeking a Category Manager to lead the General Merchandise (GM) group within Center Store in Elk Grove Village, IL.


    The Category Manager, GM Department Lead is responsible for efficient sourcing and the development of category strategies and solutions for general merchandise categories.  The objective of this role is effective supplier management and driving member participation and growth within programs. The Category Manager is also responsible for the coaching and development of the associates within the department.  This role is accountable for delivering annual sales, contribution margin, cost savings and net patronage earnings (NPE) goals.  The GM Category Lead will manage between $100 to $200 million in sales.


    Business Plans

    • Provide strategic direction for programs and brands within assigned categories.
    • Budget and achieve sales, contribution margin, cost savings and NPE goals.
    • Identify new consumer trends, recommend and manage the development of new products through the New Item Commercialization Process.
    • Participate in QA cuttings, member meetings, supplier meetings,and industry functions. 
    • Conceptualize and create goals, objectives, and action plans for programs and categories.
    • Provide guidance on member pricing to achieve NPE goals and position corporate brands against national brands to maximize sales.
    • Engage third parties (suppler partners & brokers) to develop sales plans to increase member (regional grocery retailer and wholesaler) participation.
    • Provide strategic sourcing support to team for category reviews and supplier relationship management.
    • Manage supplier selection process and post-award performance.
    • Establish strategic direction for category promotional support.
    • Recommend positioning strategies for products within assigned categories.
    • Lead projects as assigned or provide oversight to project teams.

    • Develop talent and prepare succession plans.
    • Manage employee relations.


    Member Experience

    • Maintains quality service by establishing and enforcing organization standards.
    • Becomes escalation point if issues cannot be resolved at the Sourcing or Program level.


    • Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field. Master’s degree a plus.

    Technical skills:

    • Ability to use standard business software at an advanced level.
    • SAP experience preferred.
    • Strong sales, leadership and supervisory skills
    • Superior negotiations skills.
    • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
    • Proficient in the use business software at an advanced level – Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
    • Category management and supply chain management competencies.
    • Continuous improvement mindset and action.
    • Ability to influence others to drive decision-making.
    • Strong analytical skills; strategic thinking.
    • Team player; influencer across stakeholders and at multiple levels.

    Previous Experience:

    5 years minimum of category management experience in the consumer product goods and/or retail industry with direct exposure to product sourcing and supplier management.  2 years supervisory experience preferred.  Retail experience is a plus.
