  • Overview

    Topco Associates is currently seeking a Director of Fresh Meat for the Meat Department in Elk Grove Village, IL.

     

    The Director of Fresh Meat is responsible for delivering sales, contribution margins and cost savings for the Fresh Meat department as well as establishes and accomplishes business objectives for their team. Develops and leads both category and sourcing teams and reinforces behaivors that align with Topco’s leadship competencies. Leads the development of category solutions that drive incremental member participation and growth. Through direct member engagement, is responsible for developing and executing a strategic sales plan to meet and exceed all financial objectives.  Provides leadership and vision to the organization that support the company’s overall objectives and strategies.

    Responsibilities

    Business Management

    • Oversees preparation of long range and annual budget, regular variance statements and annual audit;
    • Develops long range business plans;
    • Establishes and achieves sales, profits and productivity goals;
    • Conceptualizes and creates goals, objectives, and action plans for programs and categories, providing direction to the Category and Sourcing Managers;
    • Oversees and coaches teams during the development of Category Business Plans, and communicates final category business plan outputs to leadership for alignment;
    • Provides strategic direction for programs and brands within assigned categories;
    • Advises senior management of proposed supplier changes (when applicable) for alignment and risk avoidance;
    • Provides strategic direction for supplier relationship management for those suppliers that cross multiple categories and communicates and confirms proposed supplier choice with Topco Senior Management;
    • Oversees the process to identify broader consumer trends and recommend the development of new products through the New Item Commercialization Process;
    • Supports and executes Topco’s Operational Excellence initiatives for continuous improvement.
    • Participates in QA cuttings, member meetings, supplier meetings,and industry functions.

     

    People Management 

    • Increases team's effectiveness by recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, coaching, and counseling managers; communicating values, strategies, and objectives; assigning accountabilities; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; developing incentives; developing a climate for offering information and opinions; providing educational opportunities;
    • Develops talent and prepares succession plans;
    • Manages employee relations.

     

    Member Engagement

    • Maintains quality service by establishing and enforcing organization standards;
    • Collaborates with members to drive business building activities;
    • Increases member participation in programs through collaboration with the Member Development team;
    • Addresses issues which cannot be resolved within assigned team.

     

    Supplier Engagement

    • Establishes and maintains relationships with key suppliers in managed categories to ensure compliance with category plan including acquisition costs, vendor incentives, risk management, supply chain development, innovation, and continuous improvement;
    • Oversees the development of design and execution plans for all suppliers, spec changes and new items;
    • Oversees the definition of Supplier Selection criteria;
    • Develops sourcing negotiation strategy;
    • Oversees annual business planning, business reviews and supplier scorecards.

     

    Other responsibilities as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Education:

    Bachelor's degree or the equivalent, Master’s degree preferred

     

    Technical skills:

    Strong sales and leadership skills; Ability to use business software at an advanced level.

     

    Previous Experience:

    3-5 years leading a business entity; minimum 5 years exposure to perishables or retail industry

     

    Other qualifications:

    • Proven ability to build, manage and foster a team-oriented environment
    • Hands-on strategy and business development experience within grocery retail, general retail, CPG or related industries
    • Strong strategic thinker with ability to articulate and prioritize strategies, as well as translate them into action across all functions within the organization
    • Superior executive presence and ability to collaborate with senior leaders within both Topco and our member-owner organizations
    • Proven ability to work across the organization to influence and coordinate resources and deliver results
    • Superior verbal and written communication skills
    • Ability to travel 25-50%
