    Topco Associates is currently seeking an Quality Assurance Specialist-Product Management for non-food items in Elk Grove Village, IL.


    Under direct supervision of an Associate QA Manager, the QA Specialist promotes the delivery of optimal Quality Assurance services to members: develops product specifications in consultation with supplier and data management team; evaluates products against established current specification; inspects and grades products and evaluates supplier performance against established product safety and quality criteria to deliver brand aligned quality products; reviews supplier first production samples against agreed upon specifications, criteria and product performance, performs sensory analysis, category reviews and competitive evaluations for the assigned product categories. In consultation with supplier management team assists with investigation and resolution of product performance concerns and consumer complaints and drives continuous improvements. The Primary focus of this position is Non-Foods including baby, feminine hygiene, cosmetics, household cleaning, and paper products. However, product position may evolve into a combined non-foods/foods role.


    • Ensures delivery to Topco members of products that consistently meet specifications by evaluating finished product samples for compliance with Topco or member specifications; accepts or rejects these items according to the evaluation results; and arranges for external laboratory evaluation and analysis as necessary.
    • Ensures ongoing accuracy of current product specifications and works with supplier and data management teams to drive continuous improvement. Ensures that the suppliers have demonstrable means and methods (certificates of analysis, certificate of conformance programs) to deliver brand aligned quality products.
    • Ensures ongoing accuracy and timeliness of department documentation by maintaining, and updating product approvals and ensuring the product RAQs and controls are reviewed and adequate for consumer and brand protection and meet Topco requirements.
    • Ensures effectiveness of product evaluations by developing/modifying test procedures for measuring product quality and sensory attributes (as appropriate) against Topco specifications; Also prepares and issues timely and accurate technical reports related to product assessments.
    • Conducts quality evaluations and audits (including sensory analysis as appropriate) of Topco products against national brand and other private label competitive products. Evaluates product quality attributes as well as product performance/functionality, nutritional/ingredient components and packaging. Issues written reports and follow-up actions identified through the evaluation process and manages follow-up steps through to project completion.
    • Acts as a trusted advisor and thought partner to the category and procurement teams to develop, and deploy continuous improvement projects that derive value to the brand, members and the consumers.
    • Establishes & manages product monitoring and supplier performance for assigned categories using a risk-based sampling program and develops product and brand specific performance measurement metrics based on food/product safety and brand risk. Prepares and issues timely and accurate reports related to product and supplier performance; engages the sourcing, category management team and other appropriate stakeholders to drive continuous improvement.
    • Works with Category Management, Sourcing, Marketing Business Management groups to evaluate new products and assist in new product development and reformulation initiatives.
    • Organizes and maintains proper handling and completion of forms and other basic record-keeping activities, as specified by QA protocols and QA management.
    • Assists Supplier Management team in the prompt resolution of consumer services issues by investigating consumer and member complaints.
    • Works with Topco Regulatory compliance personnel to ensure that all Topco products and packaging are in compliance with current regulatory and trademark requirements.
    • Works with Topco Recall Coordinator, vendors, and members on product quality and safety issues related to Topco products involved in recalls or market withdrawals. Follows up with vendors to ensure all necessary corrective action steps have been taken as warranted by each specific situation. 13. Performs technical presentations related to the product evaluation techniques utilized by Topco QA. 14. Works with other Specialists to gain knowledge of other product categories to create cross-functional groups.
    • Submits period activity reports in a format specified by QA management.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned. 



    Minimum four-year college degree in Engineering, Chemistry or related field preferred.


    Technical skills:

    • Knowledge and experience in production, manufacturing, warehousing and distribution.
    • Knowledge of current product safety, quality assessments and audit of documentation to demonstrate regulatory conformance.
    • Knowledge of laboratory procedures and statistical and quality sampling measures, or experience conferring equivalent skills.
    • Knowledge of quality measurement skills applicable to assigned product area.
    • Knowledge of product formulating for HBC, over the counter medications and household chemical products.

    Previous experience:

    Two to three years of related experience desirable in a QA role in supplier/processing industries.


    Other qualifications:

    • Ability to work independently without close supervision on a daily basis.
    • Ability to regularly handle large volumes of technical reports and information in an organized manner.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with others orally and in writing.
    • Ability to work effectively and in a professional manner with people at all levels, including supplier personnel.
    • Ability and willingness to travel by air or car as required.
