  • Overview

    Topco Associates is currently seeking a Category Director in Quincy, MA.


    The Category Director is responsible for the delivery of category solutions and strategies to drive member engagement and participation, as well as value and growth for Indirect Spend categories. The position is also responsible for leading, managing, and developing a team of associates across multiple areas.


    Member Engagement

    • Develop and maintain a strong working relationships and network within the member companies that support the exchange of information about member needs
    • Increase member participation in programs through direct member engagement
    • Responsible for sales and program development, as well as program participation for specified members  

    Category Management

    • Provide strategic direction for categories within the program.  Develop value-oriented solutions to address member needs
    • Develop category management programs to achieve defined business objectives
    • Provide guidance and assistance to category teams in analysis and presentation preparation
    • Present category management reviews and recommendations to new and existing members
    • Identify new trends, recommend and manage the development of new products and services
    • Participate in member meetings, supplier meetings,and industry functions 
    • Develop and oversee ramp-up and implementation for new members
    • Conceptualize and create goals, objectives, and action plans for categories
    • Identify new suppliers to lower costs, create efficiencies and increase penetration with members
    • Responds resourcefully and constructively to new demands, priorities or challenges
    • Looks within and outside the company to identify new practices to leverage at Topco
    • Identifies long-term future needs and opportunities for the business

    Business Plans

    • Establish and monitor key financial metrics (sales, savings, revenue) for each category program
    • Recruit member participation into categories
    • Develop buying strategies to increase sales
    • Manage and communicate programs and opportunities

    People Management

    • Increases management's effectiveness by recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, coaching, and counseling; communicating values, strategies, and objectives; assigning accountabilities; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results
    • Develop a climate for offering information and opinions; providing educational opportunities
    • Conduct annual performance evaluations, talent reviews and prepare succession plans
    • Lead, coach, inspire and influence associates at all levels of the organization
    • Manage employee relations 

    Performs other related duties as assigned


    Education and Prior Experience:

    • 10-12 years of experience in food retail/wholesale
    • Experience in managing and inspiring teams
    • C-suite exposure with strong executive presence
    • Bachelor’s degree
    • MBA preferred but not required
    • Experience mentoring and developing others

    Knowldege, Skills and Abilities:

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Consultative selling skills
    • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with attention to detail
    • Solid computer skills, proficient in Microsoft Office; Excel and Word
    • Knowledge of Enterprise Software applications such as Ariba, SAP, DocuSign
    • Highly organized and reliable
    • Collaborative approach to teamwork
    • Strong people management skills
    • Demonstrated ability to lead, influence and inspire associates at all levels of the organization
    • Proven ability to provide 1:1 training and professional development opportunities for direct reports
    • Excellent presentation skills to train the category team & present new products to members as the subject matter expert (SME)
