    Topco Associates is currently seeking a Sourcing Director-HR Benefits for the Indirect Spend team in Elk Grove Village, IL.


    The HR Benefits Category Director is responsible for the delivery of category solutions to drive member participation, value and growth specifically in HR Benefits to include: medical benefits, prescription benefits mgmt., life insurance, vision insurance, dental insurance, voluntary benefits, drug-screening and background checks.  Oversee the strategic assessment and implementation of new global benefits strategies to support Topco members in areas such as voluntary benefits, employee benefits captives etc.  Support the business case development and implementation of these new and innovative benefits strategies.  Also responsible for developing and driving member engagement as it pertains to these benefits.  This role also has leadership responsibility for managing and developing a two managers assigned to the HR Benefits team.


    HR Benefits Strategy

    • Understand employee benefits challenges facing large retail and wholesale employer organizations.
    • Develop global strategies to evolve the approach of Topco members in managing employee benefits. Ability to explore solutions in new areas such as voluntary benefit programs, employee benefit captives and employee wellness solutions.  Focus on solutions that drive not only improved cost of benefits but also improved employee health outcomes. 
    • Create business plans and gain buy-in within Topco and across the Topco membership for developing and implementating these new employee benefits solutions.

    Member Engagement

    • Develop and maintain a strong working relationships with key HR Benefits member stakeholders.   Support the exchange of information with member stakeholders about needs and areas of sourcing opportunity.
    • Increase member participation in programs and through direct member engagement.
    • Responsible for sales and program development, as well as program participation for specified members.  

    Category Management

    • Provide strategic direction for categories within the program.  Develop value-oriented solutions to address member HR benefits needs
    • Develop category management programs to achieve defined business objectives
    • Present category management reviews and recommendations to new and existing members
    • Identify new trends, recommend and manage the development of new products and services
    • Participate in member meetings, supplier meetings, and industry functions 
    • Develop and oversee ramp-up and implementation for new members
    • Conceptualize and create goals, objectives, and action plans for categories
    • Identify new suppliers to lower costs, impove logistics and increase penetration with members

    Business Operations

    • Establish and monitor key financial metrics (sales, savings, revenue) for each category program
    • Recruit member participation into categories
    • Develop buying strategies to increase sales
    • Manage and communicate programs and opportunities

    People Management

    • Increases management's effectiveness by recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, coaching, and counseling; communicating values, strategies, and objectives; assigning accountabilities; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results
    • Develop a climate for offering information and opinions; providing educational opportunities
    • Develop talent and prepare succession plans
    • Manage employee relations.

    Performs other related duties as assigned



    • Bachelor’s degree
    • A current and valid health license
    • A current and valid life license
    • A current and valid Property & Casualty - preferred
    • 15 + years of experience working with insurance carriers
    • Direct or consulting experience in employee benefits with large employer organizations
    • Experience in managing a team
    • Experience with HRIS systems,
    • Pharmacy Benefit Manager, Voluntary Benefits and Captive Insurance experience a plus
    • Detailed medical, life and disability claim and policy knowledge – you just can’t “wing” this stuff
    • Employee benefit sales producer and account management experience – need to understand your competition


    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Consultative selling skills
    • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with attention to detail
    • Solid computer skills, proficient in Microsoft Office;  Excel and Word
    • Knowledge of Enterprise Software applications such as Ariba, and DocuSign
    • Highly organized and reliable
    • Collaborative approach to teamwork
